Abstract: This discussion will begin with why we calibrate: (the first 4 that come to mind) safety quality regulatory (required) repeatability   All these reasons are solid and mean something unique to the different levels in the organization.  Allow me to oversimplify an organization into Management, Engineers, Technicians.  Not all groups care evenly about all the reasons.  Regulatory affects management mainly and can lead to fines and/or jail time. Safety can affect all but I say technicians are most in the zone of danger. Quality and Repeatability affects your reputation as an organization.   Calibrating too often or not enough? How do you know what tolerances to use for calculating pass/fail.  Building a great calibration program is not just about what calibrator you carry around.  Do your people know why they are calibrating in the first place?  I suggest you can't have a great program if the techs don't know they have a real purpose.  They need to be inspired.  I'm not talking about going to Disney Land.  I'm talking about knowing their efforts matter in all those topics above.
